Independence Square with Independence Arch and Black Star Gate, Accra - Ghana
Nearby you`ll find Accra Sports Stadium and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. The Independence Arch in Accra, Ghana, is part of the Independence Square which contains monuments to Ghana's independence struggle, including the Independence Arch, Black Star Gate, and the Liberation Day Monument. The Independence Square is the second largest City Square in the world after the Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China. The venue for many national celebrations, dominated by the independence arch and the memorial to Unknown Soldier. The largest national spectacle and display of colour takes place in Black Star Square (picture above in the header of this page) on Independence Day. |
Each government service is represented in full ceremonial dress: the army, navy, air force, police, firemen, special presidential forces and a selection of schools and colleges parade in front of the president and invited world leaders as well as 30,000 spectators.
This is accompanied by music provided by the military mass band, cultural dancers and school children from the region paying homage to the president and invited dignitaries.

Independence Square (Accra)
The Independence Square is also site for Ghana`s Independence Day parades (every 6th of March) and national festivals. Every visitor is free to take pictures of buildings (included the "Black Star Gate"), but might be not permitted for close up "shots" of the "Independence Arch", during events. If possible, please ask for permission, before taking pictures of the Arc.
